Time for More Donation Quilts

As I stated in a previous post our quilt group at church makes baby quilts for the local pregnancy center.  Each mother is given a quilt for her new baby.  Below are some new quilts I made or finished this spring.

This quilt was the last of the scraps from a friend.  The original quilt was a twister design.

I think the pink and grey make a soft combination for any baby.

This was a jelly roll.  I made several quilts from this one jelly roll.  This was the last few strips. To see the one of the other quilts from this jelly roll check out the Donation Quilts What a Joy! post. It is the red and brown fence rail quilt.

This is the back of the above jelly roll quilt.  I typically do a pieced back to give the quilt a two in one look.

Believe it or not this is made from the same jelly roll that was used above.  In the jelly roll it had pink, lime green, brown and red.  It was an unusual combination but really cute.  I pulled out the lime green and some of the pink to use in this quilt.

This is the back of the above quilt.  I used the left over small squares to add interest to the back.

Making these donation quilts is an easy way to try many new techniques, patterns and color combinations.  Since the pregnancy center ministers to many different women the more variety of colors and patterns the better.  It is always a blessing to finish a quilt and know that someday soon it will surround a new baby in warmth and love.

Quick and Easy Baby Quilt

At our church we have a lovely quilt group and I am privileged to be a member.  One of our ministries is to make baby quilts for a local pregnancy center.  Each expectant mother who uses the centers services can pick out a quilt for her baby.  It is a wonderful way to show God's love to the expectant mother and literally wrap His love around their newborn baby.

Since our group provides over 100 quilts a year we are always looking for quick and easy patterns.  I found this pattern on Missouri Star Quilting.  Jenny has a great video tutorial that shows you step by step how to make this pattern.  If you have not watched any of the Missouri Star Quilt YouTube videos check them out.  They have great ideas and the videos make it easy to follow.

Here is the quilt I made using the Double Slice Layer Cake pattern.

A friend gave me the fabrics she had in her stash.  They were cut into layer cake size blocks (10 x 10).  The fabrics were a selection of library prints.  Since I used to work in the school library she thought I might enjoy making a quilt from the fabrics.  She was right.  Using the above pattern I was able to complete this quilt top in one evening at quilt group.  It only took about 2 1/2 hours from start to finish.  The border fabrics I selected from our fabric collection at church.

It is always fun to finish a new baby quilt for the ministry.  I just imagine an expectant mother who is so unsure of the future excited to select a quilt.  My prayer is each time the quilt is used she is reminded that God loves her and her baby.

If you are a quilter and looking for a way to share your love for quilting and help those in your community search for a group you can join.  I know in our town the local quilt guild makes baby quilts for the children's hospital.  Another church in our community makes them for a homeless shelter.  If you begin to ask around I am sure you can fin a place to share your talents in your community.  And, if you can't find one there is nothing to stop you from creating your own group.

Donation Quilts - what a Joy!

I am a member of the quilt group at our church.  It is always more fun to quilt with a group of friends then by yourself.  We work on our personal projects but we are also a ministry based group.  One of your major ministries is to make baby quilts for a local pregnancy crisis center.  A quilt is given to each mother for her new baby.  Each time I make a baby quilt for donation it is a joy.  I really have fun picking out the fabrics and pattern.  It has pushed me to try some new patterns and fabric combinations.  Here are some picture of a few I recently finished.

Log Cabin - This quilt was the second log cabin pattern I made.
It is bordered with a wide print of bears in the woods.

Fence Rail - This is the first Fence Rail I have ever done.
This was a fast and easy quilt especially since I used a
portion of a jelly roll. ( Coming soon the other quilts I made
with the other portions of the jelly roll)

Orange Strip Quilt - This was the leftover scraps from a Log Cabin
Quilt Kit.  The wide orange has fish in the print.  It is a really
bright quilt which I thought might be good for a baby boy.

Challenge quilt - Every month or two someone in the group puts forth a challenge.
Sometimes the challenge is to use a particular fabric (like this one), or sometimes it is
to use a certain pattern.  It is always exciting to see what each member creates during
the challenge.  We always have some really neat ideas sparked.

Bright Blocks quilt - A quick and simple pattern to highlight the black and bright
patterned fabric in the center of each block.  We only had a small
piece of this fabric, it has chili peppers in wild colors.  I love to
do bright colors especially for baby quilts.
